FO DTS (Fiber Optic Distributed Temperature Sensor) system utilizes Laser and Fiber Optic technologies. The sensing mechanism is based on the phenomenon called the Raman Scattering generated by the interactions between injected laser light and the molecules of the sensing fiber.
When a conventional optical fiber is injected by a laser, the entire length of the optical fiber functions as a temperature sensor with 1 m measurement resolution i.e., 10km sensing fiber generates 10,000 temperature points along the entire fiber cable with a 1m spacing. The location of temperature is identified from the calculation of the round trip time of injected laser signal. This is the unprecedented and powerful feature that conventional ‘down-hole logging’ sensors can not provide.
Thus real time data in digital mode from the DTS and their rate of change provides critical production information.
